The Enigma of Tommy Boyd: A Multimedia Maverick

Tommy Boyd isn't just a broadcaster; he's a one-man whirlwind of chaos, charm, and downright oddity a plot twist in questionable Bermuda shorts. Here's the confirmed scoop on his wild achievements:

  • Planted rice in Thailand's paddy fields, meditated at Machu Picchu, and caught Kilimanjaro's sunrise.
  • Cruised in a Renault Turbo Sport and a TVR, with a bank balance to make tycoons jealous.
  • Shared drinks with Prime Ministers and allegedly has Arnold Schwarzenegger on speed dial.
  • Took Madonna to McDonald's for a dinner date.
  • Survived a dolphin's lip-smacking attack, leaving a scar to prove it.
  • Mistaken for a Celtic footballer live on air, opining on Scottish internationals.
  • Penned jokes for Bernard Manning and fuelled the Bob Holness saxophone myth for Baker Street.
  • Got nabbed by police for a turtle in his car boot.
  • Braved pub crawls that ended with an impromptu swim in the sea.
  • Dated a lass named Jackie Condon.

First Memories: The King of Wacky TV

Rewind to the late '80s, when Tommy ruled kids' TV with knee-high white socks, eye-searing Bermuda shorts, and a Gene Wilder-esque haircut. His co-star? A mallet-wielding mate who bopped kids and watched them sing in the shower. Their programme, Bonk and Boob (yes, really), dodged the censors. By 1991, Tommy was in the Children's ITV broom cupboard, chatting up Grotbags and dabbling in acting as a hound-transforming lad's sidekick. Subtle? Never. By 1993, he vanished as TV execs swapped quirky blokes for, ahem, bigger draws. But Tommy was just warming up.

Radio Rebellion: Stirring the Airwaves

In the mid-'90s, Talk Radio UK unleashed a rogue's gallery: Caesar the Geezer, Jeremy Beadle, and Tommy Boyd. His Big and Small Hour tackled listener questions with boundless curiosity, but his later shows sparked fireworks. Tommy claimed nuclear weapons were a myth and reading books could melt the weight off you. Mad? Maybe. Genius? Definitely. He didn't just host he provoked, educated, and entertained, urging listeners to think for themselves. His shows were a verbal cage match, with callers from Hampshire's finest to grumpy pensioners battling his wild ideas. Love him or hate him, you tuned in to argue, laugh, or file a complaint. The result? Radio that lit your soul on fire.

Black Thursday and the Shrine's Rise

On 12th November 1998 Black Thursday Talk Radio sacked Tommy under Kelvin McKenzie's iron fist. No reasons given, just a swift exit. But fans clamoured. A year earlier, on the 9th December 1997, with Tommy's blessing (we've got the letter!), Jason Turner and Shane Terry launched The Tommy Boyd Shrine on Geocities. Armed with two blurry photos, dodgy English, and student wit, it became a haven for Boyd loyalists. Post-sacking, the Shrine exploded. A few visitors Jason, Shane, Pete, and Tommy swelled to hundreds. Fans clamoured for classic shows, and after a brief stint mailing tapes, we pivoted to downloads. By 2003, in its fifth year and sixth makeover, the Shrine was the longest-running Tommy Boyd fan site. In 2025, we're nearing 30 years, outlasting all pretenders.

Comebacks, Webcasts, and Wrestling

Tommy's a phoenix. In 1999, he played a DJ in The Bill, launched live webcasts, and co-founded FirstWebCast. He returned to LBC with Anne Diamond, reviving the Bullfighting Hour, only to be nudged out for being too spicy. In 2000, TalkSport welcomed him back for weekend slots and the iconic Human Zoo, a chaotic mix of Stephen Hawking impersonators, "Scooby Dooby Doo" callers, and raw debates. Another sacking came when TalkSport used a caller's anti-royal rant as an excuse rumours swirled they wanted a slice of Tommy's wrestling promotions.

In 2004, his Internet Hour on BBC Southern Counties let Shrine forumers hijack the show with wild games and challenges, leaving Tommy and Allison Ferns to tackle their antics. In 2008 he dabbled again in Internet Radio experimental broadcasting and became a key player at PlayRadio. From 2017 to 2018, Tommy popped up on TalkRadio, Mansize Radio, his Pompey football station, and Regency Radio, reuniting with his '80s Sunday Night crew from Southern Sound.

In 2025, he's back with a vengeance, reviving The Wonderful Hour as a streaming podcast and launching Rambling Retro Nonsense with Duncan Barkes and Hayley Hayes. Retirement? Not in Tommy's dictionary.

Our Facebook community, with 700+ followers, buzzes with news, podcast updates, and rare show snippets. We're the go-to for all things Tommy whether you're nostalgic for Bonk and Boob or hooked on his latest podcast rants.

Here's to nearly three decades of celebrating a man who's wrestled sea creatures, debated the world, and made us laugh, cry, and scream at the radio. As Tommy said in 1998: "I'd trade my 3 up, 2 down, for a wigwam of creatures I slaughtered, to drink from the mountain stream, to eat what I hunted with my own cunning." Here's to the next chapter of Boyd-inspired madness!
